Sedgefield hosted a six-card race meeting on Tuesday 9th December 2008, with the first race getting underway at 12.00pm.

12:00 – Variety Club Conditionals’ Novices’ Handicap Hurdle – 2m 4f

The opening race of the day was claimed by the Ferdy Murphy trained 11/4 favourite Bewery Man. Under the mount of M O’Connell, the winner stayed on well in the closing stages to record victory by 4 ½ lengths. 14/1 shot Stepchangeclaimed second place by a neck just holding on to edge Kinfayre Boy into third. Lucozade, the 3/1 second favourite finished well down in seventh place.

13:20 – Sendrig Construction Maiden Chase – 3m 3f

Jockey Denis O’Regan and trainer J Howard Johnson added another victory to their recent successes as Belon Gale won comfortably in race two of the day. The 6/4 second favourite raced clear of the remaining field to win by a clear distance. Of the seven horses that started the race, only four finished, with 14/1 shot Ajay claiming second place. There was considerable distance back to The Artful Fox who took third at 50/1, with 150/1 hopeful Turbulent Flight eventually getting to the finish line for fourth. The 10/11 odds on favourite Tank Top fell at the sixth fence.

13:50 – John Wade Earthworks Juvenile Novices’ Selling Hurdle – 2m 1f

It was two in two for the combination of Denis O’Regan and J Howard Johnson as 4/1 joint second favourite Barashi claimed victory in race three. The 3 year-old winner was driven clear of 10/11 odds on favourite Rivington Pike, to win by 6 lengths. The other joint second favourite Golden Tokyo, claimed third place, 15 lengths further back.

14:20 – Variety Club ‘National Hunt’ Novices’ Hurdle – 2m 5f 110y

The P Bowen trained 1/2 odds on favourite Tot Of The Knar was a comfortable winner in race four. Under the mount of T J O’brien the 6 year-old drew clear following the final hurdle to record a winning margin of 18 lengths. Easby Park claimed second place at odds of 18/1, with 50/1 outsider Triton taking third place ½ a length behind. Ballybanks, the 9/2 second favourite finished down in fifth place.

14:50 – Oakley Handicap Chase – 2m 4f

Whatcanyasay took the penultimate race of the meeting under jockey F Davis. The Mrs E Slack trained 8/1 shot kept on well in the closing stages to win by ½ a length. Easby Mandarin finished in second place backed at odds of 9/1, with Justwhateverulike claming third place at 16/1. Watch My Back, the 9/2 favourite finished down in fifth place, whilst the 5/1 second favourite Herbie unseated rider Denis O’Regan at the fourth fence.

15:20 – Variety Club Handicap Hurdle – 2m 1f

The joint 11/4 favourites fought out the final race of the day with Nevsky Bridge coming out on top under the ride of G Lee. The M Todhunter trained winner was hard ridden in the last 50 yards to win by 1 ¼ lengths from Blast The Past in second place. Toss The Caber claimed third place at odds of 9/1, with 9/2 shot Royal Flynn finishing fourth.
