The 135th running of The Kentucky Derby is an anxiously awaited event for spectators, bettors and novices at horse racing who enjoy a brief thrill ride. Excitement And Injuries Have Begun, Even Before The Starting BellQuality Road, expected to be one the favorites of the race, bowed out early Wednesday morning after missing a final workout at Belmont Park. A quarter crack on his foot had left Quality Road without ample time to train and workout. This was a blow to horse fans who viewed the colt as a having a good shot after recently winning three out of four starts, including a win at the Florida Derby. Raspberry Kiss, a two-year old filly not slated to run in the Derby, but training at Belmont, died after a collision with another horse on Monday morning. Dr. Rap, a three-year old colt, crashed against Raspberry Kiss as she stood waiting with a group of horses who were about to begin gallops. Raspberry Kiss suffered a broken hip and was later euthanized for her injuries. In addition, no horse fan or casual watcher, can forget the tragedy which occurred during last year's 134th run when filly Eight Belles triumphantly finished in second place behind the winner Big Brown, only to stumble and fall immediately after crossing the finish line. Breaking both front ankles, Eight Belles had to be euthanized on the track minutes after her glorious finish. As can be seen by mere numbers, "I Want Revenge" is way ahead of the other contenders at a three to one statistical shot at winning the race. But numbers, wins, averages and mathematics aren't the be all end all for many Derby enthusiasts. Many people are rooting for Fresian Fire, whose trainer Larry Jones was also responsible for the glory of last year's second-place finisher Eight Belles. The tragedy following Eight Belles race has many rooting for Jones and his newest horse.
