Two-year-old champion Deweycheatumnhowe added to his unbeaten three-year-old lore by holding off Crazed in the Hambletonian, the richest harness race in North America.

Driver Tim Tetrick had no tricks to catch Deweycheatumnhowe in the final strides of the season's renewal of the $1.5 million Hambletonian trot on August 2 at Meadowlands Racetrack in New Jersey. Dewey's driver, who is also the horse's trainer and co-owner, Ray Schnittker, said his colt "dug deep" to stay in front of Crazed and remain undefeated in 14 career starts.

Dewey had fashioned a huge victory in his elimination heat the week before the Hambletonian renewal. Clerk Magistrate, victor in the Mohawk Goodtimes Stakes in June, won his elimination heat in a career best 1:52-2/5. He finished off the board in the Hambletonian.

Big Plans Scheduled for Dewey

Schnittker indicated that a larger winning margin was his desire, as he had "a lot of people pulling for me". Numerous partners and owners in Schnittker's corner were watching Dewey's race, Schnittker told reporters after the successful Hambletonian trot.

He has big plans for the colt's remaining season. Dewey goes next to the World Trotting Derby in Du Quoin, Illinois. He'll head to Canada after that, for the Canadian Trotting Classic, then to Kentucky for the Kentucky Futurity. Dewey's last stop, given a sound return in those races, is scheduled to be the Breeders Crown.

Hambletonian Oaks Won by Creamy Mimi

The day's undercard featured a main event for filly trotters, the Hambletonian Oaks, a $750,000 contest that drew 10 entries. Lantern Kronos was the favorite at 3-5, with Stage Show and No Pain No Gain sent off third.

Stealing the show, Creamy Mini, driven by Andy Miller, waited until mid-stretch to strut her stuff. She took the lead closing from the outside past tiring Diana Hall. Lantern Kronos was the only other trotter in position to catch streaking Creamy Mini. L.K. had too much ground to make up, however, and faded to finish second, 1-1/4 lengths back of the winner.

Creamy Mini collected the win in time of 1:53-4/5 with what Miller said was the perfect trip needed to get the job done. Trainer Trond Smedshammer said the trip was of utmost importance. He was convinced no filly would control the race; it was the perfect trip that would win. It was Smedshammer's first win in the Hambletonian Oaks after three consecutive second place endings.

Stage Show, with winningest driver of all time John Campbell in the bike, went third, 1/4 length back of Lantern Kronos.

Crazed Rally Just Short

Tetrick had to move Crazed to the outside down the lane to gain running room as Deweycheatumnhowe took the lead in the Hambletonian at the eighth pole. Crazed showed a good rally, but Dewey had enough steam to hold him off by 1/2 length. Dewey cruised the mile course in 1:52, while Make It Happen closed for third, 2-3/4 lengths behind Crazed.
